Does Homework Help or Hurt?

Help

  • It is one thing to copy down what the teacher writes on the board or what the student writes next to you, but you truly master the skill when applying it yourself.
  • Practice makes Perfect
  • Keeps consistent level of education at school and at home.
  • Shows responsibility and a simple way to raise average
  • Shows effort towards school

Hurt

  • Takes time away from students social life
  • Punishes those who do sports
  • Causes stress and lack of sleep
  • Lack of time for chores at home
  • Over work the brain, lack of motivation

  1. I agree that homework has both its pros and cons. Personally I don't overly mind it but if I didn't have it or at least not as much then I would have more time for other activities. Do you think you could find some statistics on this topic?

  2. The top rated schools in Europe often don't hand out homework at all and give a lot more time for students to play and run around. Would love to see that in America but I don't think we will.

  3. Homework should definitely still be handed out, but in the right amounts. It helps students brush up on things they learned in class, but if it's about EVERYTHING, then chances are that they won't understand all of it and end up getting overwhelmed. As TJ Northem said, statistics would help this topic, and I think it could possibly change some teachers' minds about the homework load they hand out.
